Is there a rift between mind and body in western medicine? In this talk – presented as part of the 2008 Performing Medicine Season – celebrated neuroscientist and best selling author Antonio Damasio draws together medicine, body, mind, brain, art, performance, practice, and ethics.
Damasio’s work has exploded dualistic ideas about intelligence and emotion, creativity and rationality, feelings and facts, art and science, to investigate how contemporary neurology may enrich our understanding of how our bodies function and communicate with each other.
In this recording Suzy Willson, Artistic Director of Clod Ensemble, gives a brief introduction to Damasio and her interest in his work (03:48). During his presentation Antonio Damasio does refer to Powerpoint images but his descriptions and arguments are worth listening to even without these.
